Wonderful Wednesday- Focus on Science

It was a BIG day! Today, your child observed a living organism. Tomorrow your child will receive his/her own mealworm for studying! Your child will take care of this mealworm, providing it with the necessary resources for survival.
Insects and Plants
In this unit in science, we are studying insect and plants. We are beginning of first investigation by looking at mealworm. Over 10 weeks, your child will observe larvae grow, molt, pupate, and turn into beetles (adults, which mate lay eggs, and die.
Questions for the dinner table for the next few weeks (science focus)
What do mealworms need to live? (air, food, water, and space)

How do mealworms grow and change?

What are the stages of a beetle's life cycle? ( The life cylce of the beetle is egg, larva, pupa, and adult, which produce eggs).
What else will my child investigate in this unit?

Later in this unit will focus on Brassica Seeds. Students will observe and record the complete life cycle from seed to seed. Then Groups of students will receive vial of milkweed bug eggs. Each groups will prepare a habitat for the bugs, providing air, food, water, and space, including shelter. Next, students will observe silkworms. The class will observe painted lady larvae grow, pupate, and emerge as adult butterflies. Students will observe the stages of complete metamorphosis and compare the behaviors of moths and butterflies. Finally, students will study pollination through outdoor plant observations.
